GENERAL SANTOS CITY (7 July 2016) – Employees from the Local Government Unit of General Santos City supports Project Duterte, a new anti-drug campaign launched by the Philippine National Police here in General Santos City on Monday (July 4).
Project DUTERTE or “Drug Use and Trafficking Elimination thru Rehabilitation, Training, and Enforcement,” was conceptualized by the Police Regional Office 12 (PRO 12) to engage the community in the fight against illegal drug activities in the SOCSKSARGEN region.
The initiative was a brainchild of PRO 12 Regional Director C/SUPT Cedrick Train. This was initiated in support of President Rodrigo Duterte’s intensified national campaign against illegal drugs.
The local government unit of General Santos City (LGU-GSC) will be implementing the project as part of the Purok Laban sa Krimen Program of Mayor Ronnel Rivera.
The mayor has already tasked the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) and the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) to include Project DUTERTE in future anti-illegal drug initiatives.
In addition, the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) will also help launch the program this month. The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) committed to back the anti-drug campaign.
Mayor Rivera already indicated his support to the project and to the overall advocacy of the Duterte administration to exterminate illegal drugs in the country.
“I am very positive naman with this (Project DUTERTE) that’s why I have already committed the active participation of the local government to this,” Mayor Rivera said. “Ang gusto ko naman is for Gensan and for the entire country to be drug-free that’s why I will do my best to help President Duterte on this undertaking.”
In an interview with Train, he revealed that there are already around 6,500 drug users and pushers who have surrendered in Region 12, even before the start of Project DUTERTE.
Here in Gensan, around 100 drugs users and pushers surfaced last Friday (July 1) at Barangay Labangal. These individuals took an oath before Mayor Rivera and PNP to never be involved themselves again in drugs.
The mayor also gave an advice to those who have not surrendered yet. “Surrender na lang kayo bago mahuli ang lahat,” Rivera encouraged. (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John Lagare)
